Introducing Dagbon Digital
I am happy to introduce to you Dagbon Digital. Dagbon Digital is a platform that brings everything from Dagbon to your fingertips. We provide a platform that brings Dagbon and Dagbani development into parity with other areas of the world.
We're making information about Dagbon and the Dagbani language easily accessible and readily available online.
The Problem
Dagbani content is lacking on the Internet
We acknowledge that content on Dagbani and Dagbon culture/traditions is lacking. As at the time of this writing, there's no website/app offering Dagbani as an alternative language for users in Ghana. The language isn't available for Google Translate because there's no enough content available online for it. Only AirtelTigo has Dagbani as one of their customer care languages. There's no Dagbani dictionary available online for the world wide web. A lot of pertinent content is unavailable.
Even when content seems to be available, it is often lacking, contains errors, is sometimes biased or questionable. Of course, there are websites that have made a concerted effort to make Dagbani accessible online such as Learn Dagbani, Dagbani.Net, this one, and that. We are aware of them and we're here to complement their works and make the language more visible online.
More so, technology has come to make our lives easy and we need to take advantage of that by making it impactful to our people. There are many Dagombas who lack basic computer/digital literacy skills. A lot are addicted to social media but don't know how to use it to benefit themselves.
Let's not even get to those who don't know how to write basic Dagbani sentences even though they can equally do same in English!
We're here to change the narrative. We're developing an online Dagbani dictionary that will be freely available 24/7 and is flexible enough to add new words and terms and modify existing ones to adapt to times.
We're also making this space available for people to write Dagbani articles on different topics to increase our chances of meeting our long-term goals. We want to make translations of articles for both Dagbani and English to help our readers.
In line with above, we'll also be rolling out a Dagbani learning platform where newcomers to the language can progressively learn the language and become experts at the end. We'll likely make that a subscription since we don't currently have sponsorship sources. But if any sponsorship comes, we'll make it free like our other platforms.
In addition, we believe that improving digital literacy in Dagbon will significantly help us to achieve our goals. In light of that, we'll be organizing events such as bootcamps, trainings, conferences and workshops to enhance our people's digital literacy skills. We'll also provide digital resources such as books and other content for a fee to people who need them.
Last but not least, a Dagbon datahub will be created to capture data on Dagbon for development purposes. In that in mind, we want to provide resource personnel who are well-vested in Dagbani for organizations that need their services this regard.
In doing all these, we need your support throughout the journey. Whether you want to donate to help us, contribute content or provide any assistance, you're highly welcome. And, as our elders rightly say nubil'yini ku pii kuɣli, we believe together with you, we can climb mountains and achieve our objectives.
